14 Day Reel Challenge
Introduction
The Challenge
Welcome to the 14 day reels challenge!
I am super excited about you taking part in this because honestly, being consistent with reels and learning how to master them was the catalyst for my IG growth.
Every day you can find your reel with the topic, hook and suggestion on how to film / format it. These will be dripped to you daily so make sure you login every day to find your NEW HOOK to attract dream clients and make more sales!!!
Add a trending audio with each one! With the talking to camera and voice over reels, turn the trending audio down to 3-4 so your voice can clearly be heard over the top.
I LOVE getting to know you so please DM me on IG if you're in this challenge and let me know how you're getting on!!
Optimising your bio and profile
Trainings
Your bio is such an important part of your IG account. When people come onto your account, you want it to be obvious what you and your business is about so they know if your content is for them. Someone needs to be able to tell if YOU ARE FOR THEM easily! (Equally, they need to be able to tell if you are not for them! You don’t want an account full of unaligned clients!)
The main points you want to cover in your bio include:
Who you are
What you do
Who do you help
How do you help them
Credibility (not essential, but bonus!)
Let's start with your Instagram username. Keep it simple, keep it clean. If you can have a personal touch and add your name to your username, I'd recommend it. Avoid using lots of numbers, and random punctuation as you want it to be easy to understand and memorable.
Your profile picture needs to be clear, professional and on brand! I had a photoshoot for mine in my brand colours (which might be slightly extra) but I LOVED IT! This is the first picture people see when they visit your profile, so make sure it gives off the vibe you want!
Next is your name (the line in bold). This needs to say your name and what you do. This part of your bio is searchable so you want to include keywords here. For mine, I've put my name Brianna, and then the keywords Social Media and Business Coach.
If you’re a Nutritionist focusing on gluten-free you could have '‘Sarah | Gluten-free Nutritionist’
If you're a PT focusing on triathlons, you could have Conor | PT specialising in triathlon training
If you're a Sleep Coach for babies, you could have Alex | Sleep Coach
You can test it by typing the keywords in your name into the search bar and seeing what comes up. If other accounts come up within your niche, this is a good sign. On the other hand, if no similar accounts come up you probably need to relook at it and create a stronger keyword-optimised name.
Now for the first line of your bio. This needs to speak directly to your ideal follower specifying who you help and what you do...
Mine says ‘I help service-based businesses grow on IG & make more money whilst living their best life’ - this speaks DIRECTLY to who my ideal client is and what I do to help them. If someone comes across my profile, they have a service based business, they want to make more money whilst living their best life… they know I’m for them! 👑
The second line in your bio needs to showcase your credibility. This can be how many clients you’ve helped, client results, your growth results, a degree or qualification - anything that’s going to position you as an expert and leader in your niche. Mine says ‘£0-£600k cash in 10 months’ which instantly solidifies credibility that I can build a scalable business.
The final line of your bio needs to be a call to action. What can people expect when they click on the link? As of the time I'm recording this, miine says ‘Join the Overflow Membership’ because that’s the main offer I want to promote. If you want to encourage people to book a 1:1 with you, you could say book your 1:1 strategy call, if you are running a masterclass it could say click to join the masterclass. The main thing is it needs to be clear so your followers know what to do. This part of your bio can change as often as you wish.
Best practices for reels
Trainings
Here’s a checklist that you can use to make sure you’re filming reels to the highest quality:
Wipe your camera lens before filming (seriously, it helps a lot!)
Film in portrait, not landscape
Be mindful of proximity to the camera - don't film too close or too far away
Film in natural lighting, rather than in dark rooms with a light on
Upload straight to Google Drive to avoid it compressing and losing quality if you need to send to another device (don't send via Whatsapp or another messaging channel)
Use original content - not from TikTok / Canva or with any effects on
No watermarks from other platforms
Only video footage for reels - no photos
Types of reels
Trainings
There are a few MAIN types of reels you can create for your IG account.
B-roll: This is content that you film 'as if you were just doing your normal day to day things'. For example, walking, working, cooking, sitting on your sofa, on the phone, making your bed, working out. This is current one of the most popular types of content on the platform as it's easy for people to record and is engaging if you have a connection between the video and the hook. See an example of b-roll content here.
Talking to the camera: This is content where you actually film yourself talking into the camera. So you would spend 30 seconds or longer talking about a specific topic relating to your niche. This is a great way for people to see your energy, your personality and builds connection with your audience. See an example of talking to the camera reel here.
Trends: This is where you jump on particular 'trends' on social media. It could be a popular lip sync, or a trending dance, or a trending audio where you have to mimic a particular action. These are NOT compulsory so if they don't fit with you and your business, don't worry about doing them. But they can be really good at showing YOUR PERSONALITY and building more connection. See an example of a trending video here.
Transitions: Transitions used to be really popular on IG, but we don't see them as much anymore. However they can be good to add a different type of content and mix it up within your feed. There are many different transitions you can do from jumping and changing into different clothes, getting ready and covering the camera with a make up brush, walking through a door and switching destination. They take longer to film and typically need more practice to master. You can see an example of a transition reel here.
Screen recording tutorials: Tutorials won't work for every niche, but if there is a tutorial that you can show which gives your audience step by step on how to do something, it works well. I'd suggest starting by talking to the camera and giving a solid intro on what the reel is about, followed by the tutorial. You can see an example of a tutorial reel here.
Pointing: Not as popular but also an additional type of content to switch things up on your feed. You point in time with the beat of the music and touch different points to sync it with the text as they appear on screen. You can see an example of mine here.
Formulating a hook / CTA
Trainings
You want your content to be SO OBVIOUS who you’re directing your content to and what you’re talking about in the reel!
Remember, your audience consumes so much content daily from social media, TV, advertisements… you want your content to stop them scrolling and that’ll only happen if it’s obvious that the reel is intended for them.
Before you post, ask yourself ‘Is it OBVIOUS what the point of your reel is?'. To get more specific in your content, follow these steps:
What is the big transformation or goal you help your client to achieve
What are the smaller goals and steps that your client needs to learn / implement to see that big desired transformation / result
What can you teach them / share value on which will help them TODAY
Lets go through some examples:
You’re a Fitness Coach for busy women helping them to lose weight. A generic hook would be ‘How to get fit’ vs a specific hook which says ‘How to exercise and lose weight in 15 minutes a day’.
You’re a Nutritionist sharing home-cooked meals. A generic hook would be ‘Cook delicious meals at home’ vs ‘How to cook this delicious homemade pasta dish with an easy 4-ingredient recipe’
You’re a Travel Agent helping people book their next holiday. A generic hook would be ‘Explore amazing destinations’ vs ‘Discover these 5 hidden places in Bali you have to visit’
You’re a Makeup Artist and share make-up tips. A generic hook would be ‘How to apply make-up properly’ vs ‘How to achieve perfect, flawless foundation with oily skin’
You’re a Finance expert sharing tips on how people should manage their money better. A generic hook would be ‘How to manage your money better’ vs ‘How to double your savings in 30 days with these quick, easy budgeting hacks’
You’re a Career Coach focused on helping people land their dream job. A generic hook would be ‘How to get a new job in 2024’ vs ‘Make these 5 changes to your CV to land your dream job and increase your salary in 2024’
The difference is HUGE and will mean you’re attracting clients that you want to work with and are fully aligned with YOU!
Other little points to remember when writing your hook:
It needs to be obvious within the first couple of seconds
Make sure you use a readable font (I’d recommend using the IG available fonts)
Position your hook within the guidelines and aim for the mid-top area (this is where our eyes naturally look when scrolling on our phone)
